Low Molecular Weight (“LMW”) Heparin MMX® is a new oral colon release formulation of a LMW Heparin, which is currently in clinical trials for the treatment of mild to moderate Ulcerative Colitis in patients refractory or intolerant to standard treatments.

LMW Heparin is a biological sulfated glycosaminoglycan belonging to the heparin family. These molecules widely used as an antithrombotic injectable used in the prophylaxis and therapy of thromboembolic diseases (e.g. deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism).

LMW Heparin MMX® could be ultimately positioned as an alternative to the anti-TNF alpha and immuno-suppressant agents currently used to treat Inflammatory Bowel Disease, especially if results from clinical trials confirm preliminary observations that the product has only insignificant side effects. A phase IIb clinical trials demonstrated that LMW Heparin MMX®, when associated to 5-ASAs has no side effects, stops bleeding and is substantially more effective than 5-ASAs and has disease modifying properties.
