Zacol NMX® - Nutraceutical
Zacol NMX® is a dietary supplement (nutraceutical) based on the MMX® technology and directed to the colon. It is a product based on the application of MMX® technology to a combination of Calcium Salt of Butyric Acid and Inulin. NMX® is a nutraceutical version of MMX® technology.
Butyric Acid is a natural short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) produced in the colon by the action of the colonic microflora fermenting dietary fibres and complex starches. This SCFA is a pivotal substrates for the colonic mucosa and improves the mucosal nutritional status. The main function of Butyric Acid is to supply energy to colocytes in order to improve their metabolism, control cell development and exert a protective role in relation to colonic diseases. Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) exhibit a decreased availability of Butyric Acid in the colon mucosa. Through the addition of Butyric Acid, symptoms and the nutritional status of the colon mucosa may be improved for these patients.
Inulin is a naturally occurring dietary fibre produced by many types of vegetables. It is able to pass through the stomach and small intestine without being absorbed or modified. Inulin is used increasingly in foods, because it has excellent nutritional and functional characteristics. Among other benefits, it increases calcium absorption and possibly magnesium absorption, while promoting probiotic bacteria. When Inulin reaches the colon it promotes the development of the saprophytic bacteria, which in turn ferment the Inulin and other dietary fibres, leading to production of endogenous Butyric Acid.
The combination of Butyric Acid and Inulin with the MMX® technology is expected to have the dual effect of ensuring that the Butyric Acid is released only in the colon, where it is effective by being applied through the entire length of the colon, and not in the small intestine, where it is absorbed and does not produce any effect.
